CANALITH REPOSITIONING PROCEDURE CRP
Your doctor has referred you for the Canalith
Repositioning Procedure. The Canalith Repositioning Procedure is a treatment
for positional vertigo. The procedure takes approximately 30 minutes.
The Procedure: You will be placed on a table and then laid back
with your head hanging over the end of the table. The Audiologist will be there
to support your neck. This position usually provokes the nystagmus, which
indicates positional vertigo. If you have a positive response in
this position you will then be moved through the procedure. Once you are in the
position mentioned above, your head will then be turned to the opposite side,
then you will roll onto your side, and then will sit up with your head bent
down towards your chest. You will be moved through these positions 2-4 times
depending on the amount of dizziness you are experiencing.
After the Procedure: A soft cervical collar will then be placed around your neck,
this acts as a reminder to keep your chin up. The first 48 hours are the most
important after the procedure to keep your chin up. Some clinics do not require
a soft collar to be worn, but we have found that people tend to recover quicker
when the soft collar is used. Your movement will be limited for the next 48
hours and you will be given detailed instructions regarding this.
Side Effects: Some people feel very tired the day after the
procedure and the next 48 hours you will need to relax. You may experience some
mild dizziness for the next few days. However, this will subside over the next
few days.
Restrictions Following the Procedure: You will be
asked to take it easy for the next 48 hours. You may return to work if you feel
up to it, you just need to be careful not to look up or down or lift objects
for the next 48 hours. You will be asked to not do any housework, including
cooking and cleaning.
PLEASE DO NOT EAT A HEAVY MEAL PRIOR TO YOUR
CRP APPOINTMENT. The position may elicit a response of nausea associated
with the dizziness you feel. If you eat a light meal before your appointment,
please allow 2 hours before your scheduled time you need to be at the clinic.
IF YOU ARE UNABLE TO KEEP YOUR APPOINTMENT, PLEASE CALL THE OFFICE TO
RESCHEDULE. FAILURE TO NOT NOTIFY THE CLINIC PRIOR TO YOUR APPOINTMENT TIME
WILL RESULT IN A $50.00 CHARGE.
