Gastroesphogeal Reflux Instructions

  1. Elevate the head of bed frame six to eight inches on blocks/bricks.
  2. If you smoke, try to quit.
  3. If you are overweight, try to lose weight.
  4. Use antacids (Mylanta, Maalox, or Gaviscon) after meals and at bedtime. Dosage is one to two tablespoons up to seven times a day, one and three hours after each meal and at bedtime.

Dietary Modifications:

  • Eat at least three meals a day.
  • Do not eat for at least three hours prior to going to bed.
  • Do not lie down after eating.

Avoid:

  • Fatty foods
  • Chocolate
  • Alcohol
  • Peppermint
  • Spearmint
  • Citrus juices (orange or grapefruit)
  • Tomatoes
  • Coffee, caffeinated & decaffeinated
  • Other caffeinated beverages
