LOW SALT DIET

Purpose:
The purpose of this diet is to restrict salt (sodium chloride) as much as possible by the avoidance of table salt added to food and the use of foods low in natural salt. A good goal is 2500 mg of sodium (salt) per day.

Food Type Foods Allowed Foods Not Allowed
Beverages Fruit juices, tea, coffee regular or decaffeinated, and cereal beverages, Diet Rite Cola. Carbonated drinks such as Coca-Cola, Pepsi, limit to 8 oz. daily, cocoa mix and buttermilk.
Bread Rye, whole wheat, enriched white, unsalted crackers, all purpose flour, cornmeal. Salted crackers, biscuit mixes.
Cereals Unsalted cooked cereal or puffed wheat, puffed rice, shredded wheat, all types of cold dry cereal. Quick-cooking hot cereals, ready-to-eat cereals.
Fruits and Juices All fresh fruit and fruit juices juices
Cheese All types of unsalted, cream cheese and parmesan. All types of salted cheeses.
Desserts Fruit, sherbet, plain gelatin desserts, tapiocas made with lemon juice instead of milk, low sodium recipes (small portions), ice cream, ice milk and yogurt. Desserts prepared with salt, baking soda, or baking powder, commercially sweetened gelatin, fruit cocktail, cakes
Fats Unsalted butter, lard, unsalted nuts, almonds, brazil, cashews, roasted peanuts and walnuts, vegetable shortenings and oils. Salted butter, margarine, bacon fat, regular salad dressings and olives.
Meats Fresh lamb, beef and pork (3 oz. portions), meat canned without salt or sodium added, fish (small portions), poultry, eggs - one daily. Frankfurters, smoked, cured, salted meats and fish, meat extracts, bouillon cubes, gravy sauces, canned tuna, chicken, shellfish, luncheon meats.
Potato or Substitute White or sweet, baked, french fried, oven heated, boiled. Potato chips, corn chips.
